The Plate Coral, short tentacle (Fungia repanda), is an interesting and easy to care for LPS (large polyp stony) coral. Its colors can be very bright greens and purples to dull browns. Commonly seen in the trade with various colored rims, some Australian varieties even come in a beautiful fluorescent orange. Unlike its SPS (small polyp stony) cousins, this coral requires only moderate lighting and little to no water movement. It does, however, need a good amount of calcium and trace elements in order to flourish as it is a fast growing coral with a thick skeletal structure. It can also be target fed things like mysid shrimp or other meaty foods, as long as they’re not too large for the coral to consume. Read more
