Blue Heron is back

Postby cruznlobo » Sat Aug 23, 2008 4:10 pm

We haven't had any problems with the Heron this year until now.
At least we think it is the Heron.
We are putting in a new pond(4500 gals.) and will have the old one(1800 gals.) flowing into the new one via a stream.
We had to dig up some of our Hostas and ferns that were in the way. This opened up part of the edge of the pond. Now we are missing one comet and a couple of the babies from last year. The reason we know it was at least 2 babies is because out of all the babies only 3 were black. Now there is only one.
There was no mess around the pond and all the fish were schooled together in the deep part of the pond the next day. They stayed skittish for a couple of days but are coming around now.
The young fish were about an inch and a half and the comet was at least 3 and a half inches.
We gotta get that opening filled in with some plants.

55 gallon freshwater
55 gallon reef
1800 gallon pond
4800 gallon pond

That's all for now

Yeah, we're back.
Been all kinds of busy over here.
We're putting in a new pond (4500 gals.). It was originally gonna be a Koi pond, but after researching the fish we decided that they are a bit rough on plants and we do like our plants.
We are sticking with the Shubunkins and Sarasa Comets. Can you imagine how many of these fish we can get in this pond.
Just hope we can keep the Heron away.

When it's done we'll try to get some pics up.
We had a hard time getting the new falls to run right so we ended up letting the old pond run under some rocks and have a 5000 gph pump from the new skimmer to a new upper pool where the old pond runs into the new. It looks awesome with just a little water transfer from the old to the new.

I know it has been awhile on this post but I have read others where you talked about both ponds. Any chance you can post up some pics? I love ponds and recently took down my 2000gal do to A big algae problem followed by lack of money, time, and a new born. Next time I'm going all out with plants and bog system type stream.
